Hillary is 'suprise winner' of first 100 days, Rothkopf says

Share

FP blogger David Rothkopf has picked his surprise winners and losers of Obama's first 100 days, and one of the winners is Secretary Clinton. After stating that National Security Advisor James L. Jones is the surprise loser in the "foreign policy division," Rothkopf writes:

[A] good place to look if [Jones] wants an example [of] how to do it all right thus far is over in Foggy Bottom where the surprise winner of the first 100 days in this division is Hillary Clinton. She was supposed to be the uncontrollable ego, but instead she has turned out to be the team player who is using her star-power to very effectively advance the Obama agenda.

Indeed, check out the powerful response Clinton gave to U.S. Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) in the video linked to in the quote above (or check it out on YouTube).

This may be a surprise to

This may be a surprise to SOME people, but not to Hillary supporters. We know our Hillary, and this is very much who she is. She works hard.

*Star Power* - Oh! For sure!~ She is a ROCK STAR!

Exactly!

This was my first thought when I read this. People who know HRC know that she has always been a team player.

Love to see them working together

I'll admit while I was excited when Hillary took the SOS job there was some nervousness about how she & the president would get along after such a tough campaign. Yeah they campaigned together but had not worked side by side for years. But its great to see them on the same team now.

spare us your foolish accolades

Those of us who supported Hillary in the primary are inclined to take a rather sceptical view of what we are seeing now. We do not like the comment she made about Cheney because it is not what a Secretary of State should be saying to a legislative body charged with oversight. The fact that Obama supporters applauded is further proof that it was highly questionable.

Suffice it to say we have persistent doubts about the foreign policy of Obama. It is a mishmash of apologies, confessions, unanswered provocation. We are concerned about his unilateral grant of regulatory authority to g-20 bureaucats. We are disappointed in Hillary for going along with this policy of meeting with enemies without pre conditions. In the end, we believe it will backfire.

Your point is well taken, and

Your point is well taken, and I agree she didn't need to jump on the Cheney-bashing bandwagon (however richly-deserved the bashing), but to put things in context, many people felt Cheney had just finished dissing Obama in a very public manner. As for her bosses foreign policy initiatives, I couldn't agree more, and hope Hillary will find her own voice eventually. I believe she will.

Do you know how to lead a reluctant horse? If the horse tries to pull the lead rope away by throwing his head about, you let him have it, you’re not going to win any contest of strength with a horse. You walk in a circle, so the horse thinks you're giving way. Once the horse has some space, he'll usually settle down, and you can then lead him in any direction you want.

She didn't jump on the

I don't think she jumped on the bandwagon, she has talked that way about Bush Cheney for years and even does it right to their faces. And that's who she is, she has never curbed her mouth that i've seen, and she was hired as SOS when they knew full well who she is and they types of things she says.

I agree that her meeting with our adversaries in this matter is troubling, but she made it very clear that he won, that this is what the people wanted, and that she is willing to try to carry out that agenda. he's the boss, she either backs him, or backs out. She had her chance to back out and decided she would do what she could to put forth his agenda in the safest way possible. That's her job. If she had taken the job and didn't follow his lead, even i, who love her, would think she was totally out of her mind and out of order.

caveat

There is one thing Hillary has done as SOS that we very much agree with, and that was bringing Richard Holbrooke on board. He is the most talented diplomat of his generation, and if there is a way to find solutions to intactable problems, I am confident he will do so. And if he succeeds in doing so, it is important that he receive the credit, and that Mr. Obama not steal the credit for this as he typically does.

As for Hillary, we are worried that she is pushing herself too hard, and burning the candle at both ends. She needs to get some rest. She looks like she has not been getting enough sleep and that may be a factor in that bizarre Cheney comment. Her performance on the following day was flawless.

She always has pushed herself

FWIW, she always has pushed herself hard, has always burned the candle at both ends. I remember watching video of she and Bill nodding off at more than one event. And I don't think her comment was bizarre at all, she says stuff like that a lot. I've watched her since 1992 and it's common for her share how she feels, ever see her on the senate floor talking to Bush? It ranged from somewhat polite to glad it wasn't *me* she wasn't talking to like that. That's how she is. I've never seen her NOT like that.
