Let's see here...let's take this guy, Petraeus, who has been charged with prosecuting two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) that are EXTREMELY unpopular in the rest of the world, and let's make him...Secretary of State!
Way to win friends and influence people.
Ain't gonna happen.**
It is more likely that Petraeus would run for the Republican nomination, or that he would be nominated to some cabinet position by a Republican president.
**Then again, Obama and the Democratic Congress have shown an astonishing ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (see: health care reform, Massachusetts Senate race), so you never know.
An intriguing possibility...if Obama were to lose to the Republican nominee in 2012 (which, to be clear, I think is unlikely unless the economy does not rebound by 2012**), is it conceivable that a Republican president would ask Ms. Clinton to stay on as Secretary of State or perhaps Secretary of Defense? After all, in the eventuality of an Obama loss in 2012, Ms. Clinton would be the presumptive (and well-deserved) Democratic front-runner for 2016--so, it would make sense for a Republican president to try to neutralize her by bringing her inside the tent.
**Somewhat more likely, IMHO, is that the Dems will lose the House of Representatives in 2010.
